Kate reunites with her cousin and childhood best friend, Jane, and her long-time family friend, Auntie May but is still uneasy about returning to the place she left years ago. Kate dreads the upcoming reunion with the person that was the catalyst for the broken relationship with her father and the reason she left, her stepmother Darla.

Artistic Statement

Development for the “Dear Kate,” project started in 2015 with a basic idea of how people have their own demons with some wearing their emotions externally while some keep their demons hidden.  After we outlined the general premise of the story, I began to write.

Self-isolation, regret, substance abuse, and domestic abuse are all dealt with in the “Dear Kate,” story.  This project allowed me to explore the choices I made in my life and also gave me the oppurtunity to explore the “What if…?” possibilities.  As the “Dear Kate,” story unfolded, it became evident that this story was a mirror of my life.  I was connected to deeper than just words on a screen.

This story explores ideas such as problems, perceived or not, remain unless you face them and that love can come from anywhere and from anyone.  “Dear Kate,” also shows how forgiveness is a powerful tool to heal, however forgiveness does not mean one has to remain a victim.

In conclusuion, we believe that “Dear Kate,” is a complex, character-driven story that can relate to people from different walks of life.  A story with a strong female characters that speaks to both women and men alike.
